11 Super foods to help you give up those sugar cravings

11 Super foods to help you give up those sugar cravings

Eating healthier can be difficult when you’ve got sugar cravings you just can’t ignore. Fortunately, there a number of foods that can make the process that much easier.

Pack the sweets away and replace them with any or all of these delicious snacks, ingredients, and meals to make your house a home of health.

Sea Salt

The healthier kind of salt, this unrefined variety contains minerals and trace elements to keep your body going. As a seasoning, a pinch of sea salt will bring out the flavors in any dish you add it to, so feel free to use this in smoothies as a sugar substitute.

Coconut oil

If you still prefer the taste of sweetness over-saltiness, then coconut oil is a must-have in your kitchen. The good thing about coconut oil is that it can make you feel full longer, thanks to its ability to slow down the release of glucose into your blood.

Quinoa

This nutrient-packed grain is both a good way to stop your sugar craving in its tracks and add some variety to your diet. Your sugar cravings could be the result of a magnesium deficiency, so load up on some quinoa.
Chia seeds: What makes these tiny seeds so special is their ability to absorb and retain liquid. Adding these seeds to your jams and oats can prevent you from overeating and because they make you feel full much quicker.

Poppy seeds

Zinc deficiency is another possible reason for your sugar cravings. Luckily, poppy seeds are rich with zinc and, like chia seeds and sea salt, can be used with a variety of dishes.

Bee pollen

Similar to honey, bee pollen is another gift from one of nature’s most coveted little helpers. The L-glutamine in this product does what nutritional yeast does, with the wonderful bonus of boosting your immune system.

Ground flaxseeds

The powder form of this beloved seed can deliver a good dose of fiber when consumed. The fiber will make you less likely to reach for a snack while also reducing candida symptoms.

Salmon

The glutamine found in salmon does a job identical to bee pollen. In addition to reining in those sugary desires, salmon can also lower your risk of heart disease and make your skin look good.

Garlic

A pungent vegetable that can also be an excellent distraction for your palate. Garlic contains very few calories but is full of nutrients to keep you healthy and happy. Plus, having garlic around means you can load up on healthy garlic breads.

Bring on England, says ‘confident’ Kohli after Ireland rout

Virat Kohli

NEW DELHI: Virat Kohli is happy that India are well prepared to take on in-form England when their much-awaited series starts on Tuesday with the first of three Twenty20 internationals.

India completed the formality of a 2-0 win in Ireland on Friday with their biggest ever T20 victory, by 143 runs.

Although they were two one-sided games, after scoring over 200 in both, the India captain says they were ideal preparation.

“We wanted to go into the (England) series with all the guys having a hit and all the bowlers making a contribution so, I’m happy with the batting performances in both innings,” said Kohli.

“Everyone is batting so well, but it’s a good problem to have. Anyone who has been given a chance has grabbed it with both hands and that’s something that’s good for any side and our bench strength is shown in these type of games.

“It’s a great phase that India cricket is going through and I’m happy to see all these young guys taking their chances.”

Ireland captain Gary Wilson, who top scored with 15, admitted his batsmen rolled over too easily, but they will learn from the games which, to the delight of Cricket Ireland, were played in front of two capacity crowds of almost 10,000.

Two former Nadra high-ups booked for ‘stealing’ sensitive data

Nadra data leak

ISLAMABAD: Two former employees of National Database and Registration Authority (Nadra) have been identified and subsequently booked for stealing sensitive records and data.

The authority has nominated a former deputy chairman and a deputy director in the First Information Reports (FIRs). The complaint was lodged by Nadra HQ Chief of Staff, retired Col Tahir Maqsood Khan

The former employees were booked after incidents of thefts from Nadra Headquarters were reported to the Secretariat police in Islamabad.

The FIR states that former deputy chairman stole sensitive information and he was dismissed from the service a few months back. He also carried along some belongings of the authority, the complaint says.

Police have booked both the ex-Nadra officials under Section 380 of the Pakistan Penal Code (PPC).

On June 20, the Nadra had rejected reports claiming breach in voters data as alleged by some political quarters.

Nadra issued a clarification a day after the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) wrote a letter to the authority, in which it raised the issue of a leak of voters’ data by someone in the authority to the PML-N. The ECP letter said that the breach had occurred in the computerised electoral rolls system (CERS).

Addressing a press conference in Islamabad, four director generals of the Nadra rejected the allegations. They said, “There has never been a data breach in the history of Nadra. We have never shared any citizen’s data with anyone.”

They added that in the ECP letter there was no mention of the security breach.

Ed Sheeran ‘sued for $100m for copying Marvin Gaye song’

Ed Sheeran 'sued for $100m for copying Marvin Gaye song'

LOS ANGELES: Ed Sheeran has reportedly been hit with a $100m (£76.5m) lawsuit for allegedly using many of the musical components in Marvin Gaye’s “Let’s Get It On” for his 2014 hit, “Thinking Out Loud”.

A lawsuit filed in the Second US Circuit Court of Appeals in New York claims the “Shape of You” singer copied Gaye’s “melody, rhythms, harmonies, drums, bassline, backing chorus, tempo, syncopation and looping” for the single that appeared on his album X, according to gossip website TMZ.

“Thinking Out Loud” reached No 1 in the UK chart and No 2 on the US Billboard Hot 100, while the album has sold over 15m copies.

The lawsuit was filed by Structured Asset Sales, which owns part of the copyright for the song Gaye released in 1973, the website claims.

Another lawsuit was filed in 2016 against Sheeran’s “Thinking Out Loud“ by the daughter of Ed Townsend, who co-wrote “Let’s Get It On” with Gaye.

Sheeran claimed she had no right to file the suit according to California state law, however, since she was the biological daughter to Mr. Townsend but adopted by another family at birth.

He was also sued earlier this year by songwriters Sean Carey and Beau Golden, who claimed he copied one of their melodies for 2017 single he wrote for Tim McGraw and Faith Hill, “The Rest of Our Life.”

Sheeran has since filed paperwork denying those allegations and describing the song he wrote as “an originally and independently created musical composition.”

In 2014, Sheeran was sued by two songwriters over copyright infringement for allegedly using identical notes in his single “Photograph” from a song they wrote in 2009 entitled “Amazing.”

The musicians reached an out of court agreement, of which any specific payments remain unknown.

Sheeran has described previous allegations that he copied Mr. Gaye’s hit as “baseless,” claiming the chord progressions in both songs are “extremely commonplace.” The singer has not yet responded to the latest lawsuit against him.

US government says it will detain migrant children with parents

US government says it will detain migrant children with parents

WASHINGTON: The U.S. government said in a court filing on Friday that it has the right to detain children and parents caught crossing the U.S. border illegally for the duration of their immigration proceedings.

A 1997 court settlement known as the Flores agreement has generally been interpreted to require the Department of Homeland Security to release illegal immigrant children from custody after 20 days.

But Justice Department lawyers said in the filing in U.S. District Court in California on Friday that they now have no choice but to hold children for as long as it takes to resolve their immigration cases, because of a preliminary injunction issued on Tuesday in a separate immigration case.

That case, brought by the American Civil Liberties Union in San Diego, challenged the recent government policy of separating families in order to detain parents for as long as necessary under President Donald Trump’s “zero-tolerance” policy.

Since that policy was implemented in May, families have been routinely separated after apprehension. Some 2,000 separated children are currently under government care.

An executive order issued by Trump this month reversed the policy, and the subsequent injunction in San Diego ordered the government to immediately stop separating parents and children and said families must be reunited in 30 days or less.

To comply with the injunction, the government said Friday it “will not separate families but detain families together during the pendency of immigration proceedings.” Cases can sometimes take months or years to resolve.

Under previous administrations, parents and children were often released to pursue immigration claims at liberty in the United States. Trump has decried that so-called catch-and-release policy and vowed to detain immigration violators.

Nisar picks jeep as election symbol

Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan

RAWALPINDI: Disgruntled Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) leader Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan was allotted the symbol of jeep by the Election Commission of Pakistan on Saturday.

The PML-N stalwart moved an application in the Commission seeking allotment of jeep as a symbol, which was approved.

He is up for two National Assembly seats, NA-56 and NA-63, Rawalpindi and four provincial assembly seats, PP-10, PP-12, PP-19 and PP-20.

The PML-N has fielded Raja Qamar-ul-Islam against Nisar on NA-59 and PP-10, while Mumtaz Khan on NA-63 seat. Faisal Qayyum Malik has been awarded a ticket for PP-12 constituency.

Former premier and PML-N Quaid Nawaz Sharif reportedly opposed the award of ticket to Nisar after the latter not only refused to appear for an interview before a party’s parliamentary board, but also criticised the process of awarding tickets.

Nisar, who has not been the party leadership’s good books for the past few months, appeared to soften his stance during a presser last week, stating that his remarks against party leaders were misrepresented and taken out of context.

He lashed out at opponents aiming to exploit his estrangement, saying he can never think of harming the party he has stood behind under all circumstances.

Malaysia considers amending human trafficking law after US report

Malaysia considers amending human trafficking law after US report

KUALA LUMPUR:  Malaysia’s new government said on Saturday it is considering amending laws on human trafficking and migrant smuggling just days after the U.S. State Department reported a lack of progress in the country’s efforts to counter trafficking in the past year.

The Home Ministry said proposals under discussion focused on protecting victims, by giving them more freedom of movement and work, and introducing stiffer penalties for traffickers.

On Thursday, the U.S. State Department released its annual Trafficking In Persons (TIP) report, in which downgraded Malaysia to the Tier 2 Watch List, a category denoting nations that deserve special scrutiny, noting that the Southeast Asian country had failed to demonstrate stronger efforts than the previous year.

The report said victim protection efforts by the government remained largely inadequate and that complicity among law enforcement officials hampered some anti-trafficking efforts.

“The Malaysian government… takes note of the report on human trafficking and is fully committed to eradicating human trafficking crimes,” Home Ministry said in a statement.

A new government, led by Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad, was formed last month, as Malaysians voted for change after nearly ten years of being led by Najib Razak’s scandal-tainted administration.

Malaysia has long been known as a destination for trafficking victims, including documented and undocumented workers.

It relies heavily on cheap foreign labor from Bangladesh, Indonesia, Nepal, and the Philippines, among other countries. It has nearly 2 million registered migrant workers, but there are millions more in the country without work permits.

Shehbaz rues inaction against those involved in rampant corruption

Shehbaz Sharif

ISLAMABAD: Calling for an impartial accountability, Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz President Shehbaz Sharif said elections in such an environment would not enjoy confidence of people.

“There are other people who indulged in rampant corruption during last ten years but no visible action is seen against them,” he said in an interview.

Sharif underlined the need for national dialogue to evolve a new social contract for meeting the challenges being faced by the country.

“I am ready to open this dialogue for a new social contract. Our country needs such a dialogue. Let us forget and forgive and move forward failing which coming generation will not forgive us,” he said in an interview.

“If this country has to move forward, it can only be through a consultation process and not the confrontation. Confrontation is not an option as it will further indulge us in internal issues. We are facing numerous challenges that need collective approach,” he added.

Answering a question about his notion of national government, he said, he did not mean a national government if a hung parliament emerges after general election. “What I mean is, if our party gains simple majority to form the government, I shall take other parties along to evolve national consensus on important issues.”

In this context, he said, Pakistan has problems with India and Afghanistan. It has challenges in economy, debt and energy sector that needs broader consultation and collective wisdom of all the stakeholders.

“If this country has to prosper, then we shall have to move forward with consensus” he added. “We have to unite on major issues and so should be our narrative as this is the only way out to address our issues. There should be some meeting point.”

He claimed to have saved Rs 682 billion in various projects through transparency and taking action against those involved in corruption. To this extent, he mentioned the name of Waseem Ajmal, CEO Saaf Paani project, against whom an FIR was registered by the Punjab Anti-Corruption Department.

Now he is trying to become dear to investigators, framing cases against us. Let the voters decide about future government. Let a free and conducive environment be there for election contenders.”

He questioned as to why those responsible for Nandipur and Chiniot projects and number of other projects were not nabbed.

To a question about Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan, he said, he and the party had a long association with Chaudhry Nisar. But, as he had not applied for a ticket his name was not considered by the board. “But, I had persuaded Nawaz Sharif to award ticket to Chaudhry Nisar prior to former’s departure to London. We do not want to prolong bitterness.”

About the health of Kulsoom Nawaz, he said nation should pray for her. “She is also a Pakistani and we should think above the personal interests for welfare of the country.”

Shehbaz Sharif said if there is any proof of corruption against anyone, action should be taken across the board. “But, if we would deal things only from one angle, it would not be good omen for the society.”

About Zaeem Qadri, he said, he is also our long standing companion. He was awarded ticket for provincial assembly, but he opted for a different stance. “But, I shall say no foul words about him. We can again meet sometime.”

Saaf Pani case: NAB investigates Zaeem Qadri

LAHORE: Zaeem Qadri, who recently defected from Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz, appeared before the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) Lahore on Thursday in an investigation related to Saaf Pani Company case.

Qadri shared that he had received NAB summons on Thursday morning, adding that he was questioned regarding the alleged corruption in the company.

“My wife served as company’s director; however, she had resigned later,” he shared and also mentioned that his brother used to work without any income for the company.

He also said that he would quit politics if any corruption charges were proven against him.

When asked about upcoming general elections, he said he was fighting a war to prove that Punjab and Lahore are still alive. The entire nation is supporting me in my mission. “It will be proven on July 25 that Lahore is not a graveyard,” Qadri added.

He clarified that he is not in contact with either former interior minister Chaudhry Nisar or anyone from Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf. “I am thankful to PTI’s Aleem Khan, but I am alone in this mission,” he said.

Qadri restated that he will contest the general election 2018 as an independent candidate. “I don’t have wealth or power but still Lahore will vote for me.”
