ISLAMABAD: The Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) on Tuesday reminded people that today (July 31) is the last date of Tax Amnesty Scheme and added that the time for declaration of assets will not exceed anymore.
The FBR has warned all the undeclared asset holders to declare their local and foreign assets till today’s (Tuesday) midnight, otherwise, they would have to face consequences.
The FBR chairperson Rukhsana Yasmin asserted that there were no chances of extending the date further.
Yasmin advised the public to avail the tax amnesty scheme as today is the last date to declare local and foreign assets.
On July 1, the caretaker government had extended the tax amnesty scheme for a month with a cut-off date of July 31.
According to FBR, the scheme facilitates people to declare the details of their local and foreign assets without facing any consequences.
Under the amnesty plan, all Pakistanis are able to declare their unreported income and assets and bring their money into the tax base after paying a 5 percent one-off penalty. Then prime minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi had said that Pakistanis living overseas and declaring income or assets would pay a 2 per cent one-time penalty.
Once the amnesty period expires, authorities will use technology to identify and catch tax evaders.

WASHINGTON: US President Donald Trump said on Monday he would be willing to meet Iran’s leader without preconditions to discuss how to improve ties after he pulled the United States out of the 2015 nuclear deal, saying: “If they want to meet, we’ll meet.”
Asked at a White House news conference whether he was willing to meet Iranian President Hassan Rouhani, Trump said: “I’d meet with anybody. I believe in meetings,” especially in cases where war is at stake.
Trump’s remarks represented a marked softening in rhetoric from a week ago, when he lashed out at President Rouhani in a tweet, saying: “Never, ever threaten the United States again or you will suffer consequences the likes of which few throughout history have ever suffered before.”
Shortly before that July 22 tweet, Rouhani had addressed Trump in a speech, saying that hostile US policies could lead to “the mother of all wars”.
On Monday, speaking at a news conference with visiting Italian prime minister Giuseppe Conte, Trump said: “I would certainly meet with Iran if they wanted to meet. I don’t know that they’re ready yet. I ended the Iran deal. It was a ridiculous deal. I do believe that they will probably end up wanting to meet and I’m ready to meet any time that they want to.”
Trump said he had “no preconditions” for a meeting with the Iranians, adding: “If they want to meet, I’ll meet.”
“If we could work something out that’s meaningful, not the waste of paper that the other deal was, I would certainly be willing to meet,” he added, noting that it would be good for the United States, Iran and the world.
Hours before Trump’s statement, Tehran had ruled out talks with Washington.
“With current America and these policies, there will definitely not be the possibility of dialogue and engagement, and the United States has shown that it is totally unreliable,” foreign ministry spokesman Bahram Qasemi told a weekly news conference on Monday.
Qasemi criticised the US withdrawal from the nuclear deal and economic sanctions that follow, noting “there are no conditions for such a discussion at all”.
In May, Trump withdrew the United States from the landmark 2015 international agreement designed to deny Tehran the ability to build nuclear weapons.
Since then, Iran and other signatories have been working to find a way to salvage the agreement, even as the United States has begun reimposing some sanctions on Iran.
World powers and Iran have been working on an economic package to compensate for US sanctions that begin taking effect next month.

It is pertinent to mention here that Mr. Abbasi has served as aviation adviser.
The petitioner said the incumbent CEO doesn’t possess the credentials required to be appointed to such a post nor does he has 25-year experience of working for any airline.
At this, the chief justice wondered how Mr. Cyan has been handpicked for the post and observed this is a case of the NAB.
A prosecutor of the anti-graft watchdog informed that its senior official is probing the matter.
The hearing of the case adjourned till Monday.

“If you can do that, then you can carry the Pakistan story and naturally offer a perspective that is your own, presenting Pakistan in a fair way,” he added.

KARACHI: The 126th birth anniversary of Mader-e-Millat Mohtarma Fatima Jinnah, the sister of Quaid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah, is being celebrated today.
The Nazria Pakistan Trust will organize a special event to pay tribute to the great leader of Pakistan Movement, according to the state-run Radio Pakistan.
Various organizations will arrange seminars, conferences, discussions and debates to pay tributes to hard work and efforts of Mohtarma Fatima Jinnah for the country and the nation.
Ms Jinnah is revered for her struggle in the Pakistan Movement, her devotion to her brother Muhammad Ali Jinnah, the founder of the nation, and determined advocate for women’s rights.
After receiving a degree in dentistry from the University of Calcutta in 1923, she joined the struggle for a separate Muslim homeland and was able to win respect for her determination and devotion to the aim within and outside All India Muslim League (AIML).
She backed her brother through thick and thin when he decided to lead the Muslims of the subcontinent to achieve a country as their homeland.
Ms Jinnah had participated in the presidential election against military dictator Ayub Khan and was able to win two of Pakistan’s largest cities, Karachi and Dhaka despite rampant political rigging to change the results.
She passed away at the age of 71 on July 9, 1967 due to heart-attack and was buried beside her brother’s grave in his impressive mausoleum in Karachi.

WASHINGTON: U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo has warned that any potential International Monetary Fund (IMF) bailout for Pakistan’s new government should not provide funds to pay off Chinese lenders.
In an interview with CNBC television on Monday, Pompeo said the United States looked forward to engagement with the government of Pakistan’s expected new prime minister, Imran Khan, but said there was “no rationale” for a bailout that pays off Chinese loans to Pakistan.
“Make no mistake. We will be watching what the IMF does,” Pompeo said. “There’s no rationale for IMF tax dollars, and associated with that American dollars that are part of the IMF funding, for those to go to bail out Chinese bondholders or China itself,” Pompeo said.
The Financial Times reported on Sunday that senior Pakistani finance officials were drawing up options for Khan to seek an IMF bailout of up to $12 billion.
An IMF spokeswoman said: “We can confirm that we have so far not received a request for a Fund arrangement from Pakistan and that we have not had discussions with the authorities about any possible intentions.”
Pakistan is struggling to avert a currency crisis that has presented the new government with its biggest challenge. Many analysts and business leaders expect that another IMF bailout, the second in five years, will be needed to plug an external financing gap.
Pakistan, which already has around $5 billion in loans from China and its banks to fund major infrastructure projects, had sought another $1 billion in loans to stabilize its plummeting foreign currency reserves.
Officials in the Trump administration, including U.S. Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin, have criticized China’s infrastructure lending to developing countries, arguing that this has saddled them with unsustainable debt.
The $57 China-Pakistan Economic Corridor, a series of port and rail improvements associated with China’s One Belt One Road infrastructure push, has led to massive imports of Chinese equipment and materials, swelling Pakistan’s current account deficit.
Pakistan has had 14 IMF financing programs since 1980, according to fund data, including a $6.7 billion three-year loan program in 2013.

ISLAMABAD: A two-judge bench of the Islamabad High Court (IHC) will take up today appeals filed by former premier Nawaz Sharif, his daughter Maryam Nawaz and son-in-law retired Captain Muhammad Safdar against their conviction in the Avenfield reference.
The division bench comprising Justice Amir Farooq and Justice Gul Hassan Aurangzeb will hear their appeals and bail petitions at around 12:00pm.
Earlier on July 17, the court had issued notice to the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) on the appeals seeking to set aside the accountability court judgment that awarded 10 years imprisonment to Sharif, seven years to Maryam and one year to Captain (retd) Safdar.
It rejected their request to grant bail at that time and issued notice to the Bureau to submit its reply to the application seeking to suspend their conviction.
The bench directed the authorities concerned to present complete record of the Avenfield case on next hearing.
The judges also turned down a request by the appellants’ lawyer Khawaja Haris to grant a stay order, restraining Accountability Judge Muhammad Bashir from proceeding with the two pending cases against his clients till the Bureau submits its response.
The counsel argued that the judge, who convicted Sharif, his daughter and son-in-law, cannot hear the other two cases against them as their arguments in these cases are similar to the ones in the Avenfield case.
Citing the state through the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) chairman as respondent, the appellants pleaded that their sentences be set aside for being “illegal and based on no evidence, and in violation of superior courts’ judgments.”
As an interim relief, they requested the court to suspend their sentences and order their release from prison on bail until their appeals are decided.
Safdar was arrested on July 8 while the former premier and his daughter were arrested on the night of July 13 exactly a week after their conviction in the NAB case.
Sharif along with his daughter landed at Allama Iqbal International Airport from where they were taken to Islamabad on a private plane before being shifted to Adiala jail in a convoy of security vehicles.
The National Accountability Bureau (NAB) arrested them as they returned from London via Abu Dhabi to face prison. Judicial magistrate Wasim Ahmed executed the warrants issued by Judge Muhammad Bashir for their arrest.
On July 6, the PML-N supreme leader was awarded 10 years in prison, while his daughter Maryam and her spouse Capt Safdar were handed seven years’ and one year’s prison term, respectively.
Accountability Judge Muhammad Bashir ordered forfeiture of their properties in the Avenfield Apartments and Park Lane of London. He imposed a fine of £8 million (approximately Rs1,292m) on the former premier and £2 million (approximately Rs323m) on his daughter.
Besides, three convicts were awarded an additional one-year imprisonment, which will run concurrently for not cooperating with the National Accountability Bureau (NAB).

KARACHI: The Muttahida Qaumi Movement-Pakistan (MQM-P) on Monday presented its demands before a Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) delegation headed by Jahangir Tareen in Karachi.
The PTI delegation including Arif Alvi, Imran Ismail and Firdous Shamim Naqvi called on MQM-P leadership at Bahadurabad office.
Jahangir asked the MQM to support the PTI in the center. He also consulted the Karachi-based party regarding opposition in the Sindh Assembly, said sources.
The sources said the MQM presented several demands to the PTI including recounting in eight constituencies in Karachi, announcing Karachi package and devolving local government powers.

While talking to media after landing at Karachi airport on his private jet, Jahangir Tareen said the PTI had completed the required number of members of provincial assembly for government in Punjab.
He said his party did not get MQM-P’s vote but it got votes for change. He offered recounting in any constituency where the opposition parties believed that rigging took place.
“We have to change Pakistan now,” he said.
Faisal Sabzwari said whoever became prime minister they would seek him to hold recounting in the constituencies of Karachi where MQM-P candidates were defeated with low margin.
“Votes were not counted before our polling agents. We will present our reservations to the PTI,” he said adding that MQM-P was not interested in the federal government.

He also said his party would sit in opposition in the Sindh Assembly.
Separately, expressing reservations on the election results, Khalid Maqbool has announced that the MQM-P would stage a protest before the ECP office in Karachi on Thursday.
“If you need us in the parliament then you should speak about necessities of the metropolis,” he said.
