PM Khan’s call for dialogue must be responded positively: Bilawal

Bilawal Bhutto

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari on Thursday has urged India to positively respond to Prime Minister Imran Khan’s invitation for dialogue.

“It is the youth of the subcontinent who will pay in blood and coin for generations to come for the shortsighted decisions of a few today,” Bilawal said in his tweet.

“Pakistan’s Prime Minister’s call for dialogue must be reciprocated, time to deescalate before it’s too late,” he added.

Prime Minister Imran Khan during his address to the nation, yesterday, invited India for dialogue and repeated Pakistan’s wish for lasting peace in the region.

The PM  took nation into confidence over Pakistan Air Force (PAF)’s operation of striking down two Indian fighter jets.

The premier again invited India for dialogue by saying that Pakistan also feels the pain of February 14 Pulwama attack victims but peace remains the only way to heal their wounds.

The soaring tensions reached a new height between the two neighbouring countries as two fighter jets of Indian Air Force were shot down by Pakistan Air Force in bright day light on Wednesday.

Inter Services Public Relations (ISPR) Director General Major General Asif Ghafoor said the military action from Pakistan was a demonstration of its defense capability as a reaction towards violation of Line of Control by Indian fighter jets on Feb 26.

New planet to wow ‘Star Wars’ fans

LOS ANGELES: When the “Star Wars” galaxy is brought to life at Walt Disney’s US theme parks later this year, fans will not step onto the iconic landscapes of Hoth or Tatooine.

The 14-acre (6-hectare) Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge sections of the two theme parks are set on Batuu, a remote frontier planet never seen on screen.

Expectations run high from generations of fans, many of whom have waited 40 years since the original 1977 film to visit a real-world version of the galaxy far, far away. Disney describes Galaxy’s Edge as its most ambitious park expansion ever.

Theme park designers said they debated whether to replicate a well-known movie location such as Luke Skywalker’s desert home of Tatooine or the icy planet Hoth.

The team consulted with the Lucasfilm division and opted to build a planet that had been mentioned in “Star Wars” movies and books but was not yet familiar to fans.

The goal was to make visitors feel like they were in the “Star Wars” world but could have a new experience where they play a role, said Chris Beatty, executive creative director at Walt Disney Imagineering.

Designers decided to “lean forward into the future,” Beatty told reporters, “but leave a door open to the past.”

“There is a lot of risk and a lot of pressure to deliver on people’s dreams and imaginations,” he added, “but that’s what we do as imagineers.”

In the works for more than four years, Galaxy’s Edge is set to debut at California’s Disneyland this summer and at Walt Disney World in Florida in the fall. Opening dates have not been announced.

Disney’s theme-park designers worked with Lucasfilm to craft a “Star Wars” story that could work in characters, creatures, vehicles and other elements old and new.

The land centers on a settlement called Black Spire Outpost inhabited by smugglers and bounty hunters. The time period is set during the current movie trilogy, which will conclude with the December release of “Star Wars: Episode IX.”

MILLENNIUM FALCON, BLUE MILK

A main attraction, Millennium Falcon: Smugglers Run, was designed to make visitors feel like they are flying Han Solo’s famous spaceship. An animatronic Hondo Ohnaka, a pirate from animated TV series “The Clone Wars,” will invite guests on a mission.

In a second experience called Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance, visitors will try to escape the First Order, and characters such as Rey and Poe will appear.

Elsewhere there are shops to build your own lightsaber or droid, a restaurant serving roasted meat and a cantina inspired by the colourful watering holes seen in “Star Wars” films. Drinks will include a Jedi Mind Trick and a Tatooine Sunset.

Everything is designed to immerse guests in the story. “You won’t feel like you’re in a theme park,” said Bob Chapek, Disney’s chairman of parks, experiences and products.

To achieve that, storytellers studied “Star Wars” films, TV shows and books, recreating details such as droid tracks on the ground.

Chefs inside the food and beverage division imagined what Batuu residents would eat. Items for sale will include the galaxy’s famous blue milk and a unique cut of pork ribs meant to look like they were taken from Kaadu, a wingless beast ridden on Naboo.

In addition, Disney wants to keep guests in lines entertained. A Disney parks app will offer Galaxy’s Edge games while they are in the land.

Disney’s designers and storytellers have high hopes for fan reactions.

“I think people are going to fall to their knees and start kissing the ground,” said Margaret Kerrison, managing story editor at Walt Disney Imagineering. “It sounds like a total exaggeration, but I feel like it’s going to happen.”

5G presents security challenge

While Washington’s concerns that future 5G wireless networks could be vulnerable to spying have dominated headlines, businesses have long been pushing to make sure the technology is as secure as possible.

With fifth-generation wireless networks, or 5G, starting to be rolled out this year, the issue of 5G security was in focus at the Mobile World Congress trade fair which got under way Monday in Barcelona.

Unlike upgrades of wireless networks in the past, 5G will deliver not just faster phone and computer data but also help connect up cars, appliances, cargo and crop equipment.

5G’s much faster speeds, vast data capacity and lower latency — or response time — are expected to underpin entirely new technologies such as self-driving cars and telemedicine — which in turn may attract cyberintrusions by criminals or terrorists.

“There will be more data which will be transferred…it is clear that security is much more complicated,” said Yannick Sadowy, the director for telecoms and media at consulting firm Accenture.

Mathieu Lagrange, who is responsible for internet security at <b>com institute, said the risks to 5G’s security “were taken into account” when the norms for the technology were established.

But a study by the University of Lorraine in France found that the new wireless network still contains some security holes which were already present in previous networks, 3G and 4G.

5G offers “improved data protection when compared to the previous wireless norms” but “flaws persist and the weaknesses that have been identified” could allow “several cyber attacks and have an impact on the protection of privacy,” it said.

Experts say the architecture of 5G networks also presents entirely new security challenges.

Fifth generation wireless networks use “network virtualisation”, which refers to moving some resources which have traditionally been delivered in physical hardware to a virtual software-based network.

It is designed to allow the network to make better use of data transfer rates and provide more flexibility to 5G networks.

“Operators are moving from a hardware system to a virtualised and fully automated one,” said Darren Anstee, technology director at Netscout, which provides software for networks.

“Security is about visibility, when you can’t see everything on your network, this is when you have a problem,” he added.

Nothing 100% secure

5G allows for the available bandwidth to be split up into channels, each of which is independent from others and can be separately secured, which some experts say can help boost security.

“We can create a kind of micro-networks, with different levels of security. The idea is to compartmentalise the network according to different uses,” said Laurent Boutet, a systems engineer at US computer networking company F5Network.

Mobile communications industry body GSMA, which stages the Mobile World Congress, estimates the number of connected devices will triple to 25 billion by 2025.

For Dexter Thillien, an analysts at Fitch Solutions, the main challenge for security is this rise in the “number of entry points, considering the exponential number of objects which will be connected.”

“From the point of view of security, the network itself is secondary,” he said.

“You have to keep in mind that nothing will ever be 100 percent secure. We still don’t have a precise idea of how billions or even trillions of connected objects could affect networks, it is still unknown at this point,” said Thillien.

Trump says hopefully India, Pakistan conflict coming to an end

HANOI: U.S. President Donald Trump said on Thursday he hoped the decades-long conflict between India and Pakistan will be coming to an end, after the two nuclear powers clashed across a contested border in the disputed Kashmir region.

Speaking at a news conference in Vietnam after a second summit with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, Trump said he had some “reasonably decent” news from India and Pakistan. He did not elaborate.

The US president said “we have been observing the recent situation and trying to deescalate constraints between Pakistan and India.”

World powers have urged restraint as tensions escalate following tit-for-tat air strikes this week after a suicide car bombing that killed at least 40 Indian paramilitary police in Indian-controlled Kashmir on Feb. 14.

Trump said he had some “reasonably decent” news from India and Pakistan

As per a statement issued by Pentagon, Acting U.S. Defense Secretary Patrick Shanahan has also stressed on easing Pak-India row and urged both the nuclear states to avoid further military action.

On Wednesday, a United States’ think tank while expressing concern over the escalation between Pakistan and India termed it dangerous for the entire region.

Escalation with Pakistan to help Modi in wining polls: BJP leader

BJP leader

NEW DELHI: A leader of India’s ruling party Bhartiya Janta Party (BJP) on Thursday revealed that Narendra Modi’s claims of cross-border strike over Pakistan are only aimed at achieving his political goal of sweeping general polls.

Indian pm is at receiving end after escalating tensions with Pakistan in the wake of Pulwama attack.

BS Yehdiyupara, a BJP’s leader from Indian state of Karnataka, unmasking the heinous face of Modi, said escalation with Pakistan and claims of strike will ultimately benefit him in winning the polls.

“The move can help Modi in bagging at-least 22 seats in the upcoming general polls in Karnataka,” he continued.

Yehdiyupara further said that the move of Indian PM has also paid in decreasing anti-Modi wave across India.

Yesterday, a mother of an Indian soldier who died in Pulwama attack has rubbished Modi-led Indian government’s claim of a ‘surgical strike’ within Pakistan.

The false claims explained

Nawaz Sharif to challenge IHC verdict on his bail petition

ISLAMABAD: Former prime minister Nawaz Sharif has decided to challenge the Islamabad High Court’s (IHC) verdict on his petition seeking bail on medical grounds, sources said.

The high court on Feb 25 had rejected Sharif’s plea seeking suspension of sentence in Al-Azizia reference on medical grounds.

ARY News has received a copy of the original document of the decision collected by the former premier’s legal team from the high court.

Nawaz Sharif’s counsel Khawaja Haris will submit a petition in Supreme Court within two to three days to challenge the IHC decision, sources said.

The text of the plea says the petitioner has hope of justice from the Supreme Court.

The petition seeks the apex court to declare the Islamabad High Court’s decision as void.

A division bench of the IHC comprising Justice Amir Farooq and Justice Mohsin Akhtar Kiyani, dismissed the plea of the former premier, stating that the bail can not be granted on medical basis.

“Nawaz Shairf is not suffering from any disease which can not be treated in Pakistan,” the bench observed.

The security was beefed up in and around the high court on Monday with the deployment of additional contingents in the area.

The former premier is currently imprisoned at Kot Lakhpat jail. He was earlier admitted at hospital on February 15 owing to his illness.

Sharif had first filed an appeal with the IHC challenging his conviction in the case. Later, he submitted a petition in the court seeking bail as an interim relief. The former PM’s lawyer sought bail of his client with a request to the court to separately hear the bail plea.

An accountability court in Islamabad had pronounced a seven-year jail term to the former premier and ordered him to pay $25million and Rs1.5 billion as fine in Al-Azizia reference on December 24.

‘No agreement’ reached at Kim-Trump nuclear talks

HANOI: The nuclear summit between US President Donald Trump and Kim Jong Un in Hanoi ended without an agreement Thursday, the White House said after the two leaders cut short their discussions.

They had “very good and constructive meetings” and “discussed various ways to advance denuclearisation and economic driven concepts”, White House press secretary Sarah Sanders said in a statement.

But she went on: “No agreement was reached at this time,” adding that their “respective teams look forward to meeting in the future,”

No joint communique was issued, despite high expectations beforehand for progress.

In the original White House programme, a “Joint Agreement Signing Ceremony” was scheduled as well as a working lunch for the two leaders.

In the event, both men left the summit venue without a public signing ceremony and Trump moved up his news conference by two hours, sparking doubts about the progress made at the summit.

The Hanoi summit was supposed to build on their initial historic meeting at Singapore that critics said was more style over substance.

In Hanoi, the smiles and bonhomie remained as Trump touted the “special relationship” between the two but concrete statements were vague.

In Hanoi, the smiles and bonhomie remained as Trump touted the “special relationship” between the two but concrete statements were vague

From the outset, Trump had appeared to downplay expectations of an immediate breakthrough in nuclear talks, saying he was in “no rush” to clinch a rapid deal and was content if a pause in missile testing continued.

He frequently dangled the prospect of a brighter economic future for a nuclear-free North Korea, at one point saying there was “AWESOME” potential.

As in Singapore, the two men put on a show of bonhomie, appeared to share jokes in front of reporters.

Looking relaxed but appearing to say little, they indulged in a poolside stroll Thursday around the gardens of the luxury Metropole Hotel, a colonial-era building that has played host to stars ranging from Charlie Chaplin to Brad Pitt.

It echoed a garden walkabout in Singapore, where the two men bonded over Trump’s hulking car 1 the “Beast” — with the US president allowing the younger man a glimpse inside.

Viral video of Indian warplanes striking targets in Pakistan was from a video game

Multiple Facebook posts share a video that has been viewed hundreds of thousands of times which they claim shows an airstrike by Indian fighter jets in Pakistan. The claim is false; the footage is actually from a military simulation video game.

The posts, for example, this one which was posted February 26, 2019, and has been viewed more than 13,000 times, contain black and white footage filmed through a target scope which shows people running from a building before it is hit by a rocket and explodes.

“Indian Air Force attacks Pakistan and kills about 250 terrorists. Historic! #SurgicalStrike Over 245 terrorist eliminated in IAF attack,” the post’s caption says.

India had claimed to have demolished an alleged terrorist camp as it violated Pakistan’s Line of Control (LoC) on February 26 in retaliation for a suicide attack in Indian occupied Kashmir on February 14 which left more than 40 Indian soldiers dead.

Indian aircraft had intruded Pakistani airspace and were forced to return owing to the timely response of the Pakistan Air Force. However, Indian leaders claimed to have hit an alleged terrorist camp and caused heavy casualties.

Pakistan rejected the Indian claims as did locals in the area and said Indian jets were forced to return owing to the timely response of the Pakistan Air Force (PAF).

“Indian aircraft intrusion across LoC in Muzafarabad Sector within AJK was 3-4 miles. Under forced hasty withdrawal aircraft released payload which had free fall in open area. No infrastructure got hit, no casualties. Technical details and other important information to follow,” director general of the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) wrote on Twitter.

Earlier, Major General Ghafoor had said, the Indian aircraft “released payload in haste while escaping which fell near Balakot”.

Maj Gen Ghafoor tweeted images of the “payload of hastily escaping Indian aircraft” which “fell in [the] open”.

Here is an AFP story on the February 26 incident.

The misleading video has been shared repeatedly on Facebook and has been viewed more than 400,000 times since it was posted on February 26, 2019.

A reverse image search using keyframes from the misleading video found that the footage is actually from a military simulation video game called Arma 2.

The original footage was uploaded to a YouTube gaming channel called Double Doppler on July 9, 2015 with a title: ‘Really Short Engagement (ft. Taliban) – Apache Gunner FLIR Cam #6 – Arma 2’

Below is the original footage:

The caption of the video on YouTube says: “ Gunner perspective in the US Army Apache during battle, using FLIR camera with M230 sound mod. Like real life. Become part of the CREW – share, comment & subscribe!”

The misleading footage can be seen in the original video from 23 seconds onwards.

Below is a screenshot of the footage used in the misleading post (left) alongside the original footage (right) from the video game:

Doctor performs first 5G surgery

BARCELONA: Next-generation wireless technology is taking the medical world a step closer to robots performing remotely-controlled surgery, a doctor in Spain said on Wednesday after carrying out the world’s first 5G-powered telementored operation.

Doctors have telementored surgeries in the past using wireless networks but blazing fast 5G increases image quality and definition which are crucial for medical teams to take decisions with as much information, and as few mistakes, as possible.

“This is a first step to achieving our dream, which is to make remote operations in the near future,” said Doctor Antonio de Lacy, after providing real-time guidance via a 5G video link from a Barcelona congress centre to a surgical team which operated on a patient with an intestinal tumour about five kilometres away at the Hospital Clinic.

5G greatly reduces latency — the time it takes to get a response to information sent — of wireless networks so images and data are relayed almost instantly.

Experts predict in the future 5G will allow surgeons to control a robot arm to carry out operations in remote locations that lack specialist doctors.

De Lacy, the head of the hospital’s gastrointestinal surgery service, used his finger to draw on a screen an area of the intestine where nerves are located and instructed the team how to navigate the surgery.

The demonstration was part of the Mobile World Congress, the mobile industry’s biggest annual and global event, which is being held in the Mediterranean coastal city this week.

John Hoffman, the chief executive officer of mobile communications industry body GSMA which organises the annual trade fair, said it was “the world’s first 5G mentored live surgery”.

“This is truly revolutionary and just one of the benefits that 5G will bring us,” he added.

During the operation the 5G connection had a lag time of just 0.01 seconds, compared to the 0.27-second latency period with the 4G wireless networks which currently predominate in developing nations.

“If you are going to do remote assisted surgery, you need to be almost there in person. You cannot have more than a couple of milliseconds latency. And that is where 5G technology comes in,” GSMA director general Mats Granryd said.

5G’s lower latency, faster speeds and vast data capacity could also help revolutionise multiplayer mobile gaming, factory robots and make possible new technologies such as self-driving cars.
