Interim Setup: Sindh, KP, Balochistan yet to decide caretaker CMs

KARACHI: After agreement over the names of Caretaker Prime Minister and Chief Minister in Punjab, other three provinces have yet to decide the names of their caretaker chief ministers.

Outgoing Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah and Leader of the Opposition in the Sindh Assembly Khwaja Izharul Hasan will meet Wednesday (today) to discuss and finalize a consensus candidate for the caretaker chief minister of the province.

After the two sides held their first meeting on Monday, it was expected that the government and opposition will hold further consultations on Tuesday but the two sides did not hold a meeting on the day.

The chief minister and opposition leader in their first meeting discussed and exchanged the names of each side for the caretaker chief minister office.

According to sources, People’s Party has suggested the names of Qayyum Soomro, Dr. Younus Soomro and Ghulam Ali Pasha, while the MQM has recommended the names of former chief secretary Lala Fazal-ur-Rehman and seasoned politician and media personality Javed Jabbar.

It was being expected that there would be no problem in finalising a consensus candidate but the two sides did not come into contact on Tuesday.

The opposition leader and chief minister will meet today to hold talks on the appointment of the caretaker chief minister. “The two sides are likely to decide one name from Fazal-ur-Rehman or Ghulam Ali Pasha,” sources said.

The sources said that the name of the caretaker CM likely to be made public on Wednesday, which is the final day for the CM and opposition leader to take a consensus decision.

The opposition and the government in Balochistan have short-listed the two names and one of which will be decided in coming 24 hours, well-placed sources said.

The two sides will decide one name from Ashraf Jahangir Qazi and Allauddin Marri for the provincial caretaker chief minister, the sources added.

The matter of the caretaker setup faces deadlock between the government and opposition in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa after the government stepped back from the earlier agreement over the name of Manzoor Afridi as the caretaker CM.

The government is now insisting for nomination of an undisputed person for the top provincial office. The opposition, however, not prepared to withdraw the name of earlier nominee.

The leader of the opposition in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Assembly Maulana Lutf-ur-Rehman has said that the two sides are holding consultations adding that no name has been dropped from the consideration.
