SC orders action against illegal campuses of private varsities

Supreme Court

LAHORE: The Supreme Court on Saturday directed the Punjab government to take legal action against the private universities that have established illegal sub-campuses in the province.

The two-member bench headed by Chief Justice of Pakistan Mian Saqib Nisar was hearing a suo motu case pertaining to non-issuance of degrees to students of a collage affiliated with the University of South Asia.

The bench sought from the provincial government details about private universities, number of colleges affiliated with them, and their fee structure.

Separately, the apex court heard a suo motu case regarding the hefty salaries of the public sector companies’ heads.

During the proceedings, a NAB official submitted a report that extra salaries worth Rs313 million have been taken back from the officers of the 56 public sectors companies.

He said that nine officers still have not returned the extra salaries amounting to Rs118 million.

At this, the chief justice sought response from the officers who have not yet returned the extra salaries.
